As a priestess to the goddess Athena, Medusa devoted herself to a life of celibacy. Known for her beauty, Medusa draws the eye of Poseidon (god of the sea and rival of Athena) and rejects his advances due to her loyalty to Athena. A vengeful Poseidon decides to humiliate Athena by raping her priestess on the steps of her temple.
In their time, gods claimed their mate as their permanent partner, making Medusa Poseidon's wife. Furious from what appeared to be betrayal, Athena banishes Medusa to a faraway island where she is cursed with madness, snakes hair, and a stone gaze.
